My booster heater under the car is also stone cold all the time. Can anyone tell me what VAG COM is. Is it a piece of software that can be run on a pc or is it a piece of diagnostic hardware.

I am very reluctant to go anywhere near a Ford main dealer, they cant even deciede what engine is fitted to my car. They tell me its 115bhp but have never heard of the pump duse engine (I wanted to know what grade of engine oil to use - One said dont use fully synthetic oil in a diesel as its too thin!! Another main dealer said if i use anything other than fully synthetic the engine will be seriously damaged.Im now very confused). Car is late 2000 (X) 1.9TDi with new shape triangualr headlights if it helps.

Thanks in advance

Engine fitted is probably 1.9 tdi 115ps PD

oil must be to vw 505.01 spec nothing else will do (others may/may not stop damage to injectors)

this means

Ford Formula SD oil

or

Quantum PD

or

Millers XFE pd

may be others but they must say 505.01 (not 505.02 or 505.00)

Ignore a dealer that says otherwise, oh annd by the way did I mention the 505.01 spec

vag-com is a bit of software with hardware interface (OBD2 Spec) which communicates with the modules in the car, an unregistered version can read faults and setting and limitted resettings (will be corrected here) a registered version (costing an extra

Thanks for the quick reply NikpV....Engine oil Spec Noted.

I have only owned the car for a couple of weeks. It was a private sale and when buying I thought the heater was working because there was warm air coming out of the rear vents when the heater was switched on. I'd never come across this arrangement before. I now understand (am i right) that the booster heater helps to warm the cooling system of the car faster so that it can provide warm air to the cabin quicker. Not worried by the heater not working as i bought the car for such a good price and am absolutely delighted with it....it just annoys me that something is not working. I am a competant DIYer (classic car restorer) and will be able to fix this if I can clear the faults stored as suggested in other peoples posts.

Excellent site with quality information/discussion.

Thanks again...

no problem

the aux heats the cooling system to enable the engine to reach normal operating temp quicker (side effect is that the cabin can also be warmed quicker )

May be the glowpug (common fault) - click on the link in my signature for the faq and look at the first post (aux heater)

would help to mention your car details in future (after 30 posts you can put them in your signature)

Craig...just to echo what Nikpv has said.

to get basic vagcom - which is software that can communicate with the cars systems - you just download it of the Internet, buy a lead off ebay (approx

One thing to bear in mind with the shareware version of VAGCOM is that, once you have paid your $99 to activate it, you are stuck with using it on one computer, unless you pay a further $99 to activate it on another computer.

If you buy the proper lead, not only do you get the full functionality (and a far better quality lead), but the activation of the software is built into the lead and you can load VAGCOM onto more than one computer without having to pay the $99 each time.

I left out all the "rarer" brands - those mostly continental etc. There are dozens.

I have my lead on order from ebay, and am going to attempt on my next day off, to change the glow plug on my booster heater, with the excellent guide on here.
